Expert Tip: Consider BIBS Insulation

BIBS-InsulationAs a green home builder, we often rely on something called BIBS insulation to help us build better high-performance homes.

On our YouTube channel, you can find a video of our crews insulating BIBS insulation a custom home being built in Chesterfield, Missouri. It’s been one of our most popular videos, so we wanted to share it with those who follow our blog.

BIBS stands for Blown-In-Blanket insulation. It’s a great option when building a new home or renovating an existing one. BIBS is a patented system that blows dry white fiberglass insulation into walls, floors, attics and ceilings. Typical fiberglass batts can leave voids. BIBS is blown-in behind a webbing which eliminates voids and air gaps, and that leads to a higher R-value than standard fiberglass batts. BIBS does cost more than standard batts. It comparable to blown cellulose, but less expensive than spray foam.

The first step is to enclose the wall or ceiling cavities with a netting stapled in place. The breathable fabric creates an enclosure and holds the blown-in fiberglass in place. Once the netting is secured, a hole is cut in each cavity and the insulation is blown-in. The process is quick, easy and leaves behind little mess. Equally important, BIBS insulation has not been chemically treated, so there is no off-gassing or release of harmful fumes into the home. The insulation does not support moisture, mold, or provide food for insects or animals. It is non-corrosive and will not contribute to the rusting or deterioration of pipes or studs.
