Building a Forever Home in a Beloved St Louis Neighborhood

When Rick & Meredith Schaper, owners of St Louis favorite Dogtown Pizza, decided they were ready to build a new home where they could retire, they looked to Hibbs Homes to help them carve out a little slice of the Historic Dogtown Neighborhood that was perfect for these hardworking entrepreneurs.

As the Schapers' packaged foods business began to grow, they decided the time was right to begin building their dream home in the neighborhood that means so much to them. Many of the existing homes in Dogtown were built around the end of the 1890s, with a few neighborhoods popping up in the 1920s and the 1950s. They decided that they wanted a more energy-efficient home that would incorporate universal design principles - an important feature that means they cab continue to live in the home beyond retirement.

The Craftsman-style home they designed borrows from the character of the homes that have make Dogtown so unique, and the design builds upon it by incorporating the energy-efficient and sustainable home features that are the signatures of our Hibbs Healthy Homes.

Rick and Meredith's project was in full swing in spring of 2020, and our team truly stepped to the plate to deliver an exceptional experience despite the uncertainty and changes that permeated that year.  They messaged to let our team know that they had a lot on their minds having to deal with the impact on the food distribution industry during that time and building their home remained a bright spot during that time.

Rick and Meredith agreed to allow the Hibbs Homes podcast team to follow them through their new home design and construction journey. In Season 2 of our podcast, The Art of Custom, we followed along from excavation to closing and give our listeners a true insider's perspective of the home building process - from surprises like prohibition-era artifacts to important decisions about systems and finishes.
