History

Two Franciscan friars by the name of Escalante and Dominguez led a group that became known as the first white visitors to enter Utah Valley. The priests kept a good record of their journey as well as the places they visited. They came from Santa Fe, New Mexico, via the Old Spanish Trail with the purpose of meeting the Ute Indians. The Franciscan monks developed a good trading relationship with the Ute Indians and, in their detailed records, often remarked on the beauty of the area, now known as Provo and Orem Valley. They left with plans to establish a settlement in Utah Valley. However, this was not realized, and all that was left of their visit to the area were their records.

Other frequent early visitors to the area were French-Canadian fur trappers. The Provo River and the City of Provo were both named in honor of a well-known early trapper and respected mountain man named Etienne Provost. Provost established trading posts on the shores of Utah Lake and the Great Salt Lake, the latter of which he is widely believed to have been the first non-Native to see.
